Making a good movie is not an easy task in itself, but making a good sequel is even more difficult. Especially in situations where it is not possible to lure the leading actors of the original or the original story has a finished look and does not need to be continued.
Wanting to "cut the dough" on the popularity of the first part, the creators sometimes give out a product that can not always be called a film.
So, the 10 worst sequels for which it hurts fans of the originals.
10. Speed 2: Cruise Control | 1998
The original “Speed” of 1994 turned out to be a vigorous action movie that kept the viewer in suspense and did not let you get bored. Last but not least, it happened thanks to the duet of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, who interacted perfectly with each other.
Reeves refused to continue filming, deciding instead to go on tour with his band Dogstar. The team did not achieve much success, but it is still better than what Jan de Bont removed without him.
The little-known actor Jason Patrick could not replace Keanu, and Bullock alone simply "did not pull out" the absurd plot. The situation was slightly brightened up by Willem Dafoe, who played a terrorist, but the film still failed at the box office.
The first part was shot for $ 30 million and raised 350 million, at the same time receiving a couple of technical Oscars, and the sequel for 160 million (!) Did not even pay off and earned 8 nominations for Golden Raspberries, becoming the worst sequel of the year.
9. Model male 2 | 2016
Another “triumph” of the Golden Raspberry Award: 7 nominations for the year. The first part, although it was an amateur, but still contained at least the beginnings of humor. Not a masterpiece, but look at once will come down.
The continuation turned out to be simply unpleasant for viewing, causing the audience “Spanish shame”.
8. Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights | 2004
The original 1987 tape was a breakthrough for actress Jennifer Gray, and Patrick Swayze did a sex symbol at all. Even now, the film is considered one of the best on the topic of dancing, which can not be said about its sequel. Unknown actors starred in it, and the budget was very modest. By the way, even managed to recapture it with great creak.
7. Butterfly Effect 2 | 2004
The script of the first part was gathering dust for a long time in Hollywood, and everyone still did not dare to film it until it fell into the hands of Ashton Kutcher. He invested his own money in production, becoming one of the producers, and also played a major role.
An excellent tape with 4 different endings (the most harmless in the rental version) was to the taste of both the audience and critics, but it obviously did not need to be continued, especially this one.
The creators of the sequel took all the best that was in the first part and simply ruined it. To make a film for 6 million and 20 days is somehow not serious when it comes to the “Butterfly Effect”.
This story also has a triquel, but there the authors did the impossible - they did worse than it was in the second part.
6. Basic Instinct 2: Thirst for Risk | 2006
The logically twisted plot, the magnetism of Sharon Stone and the charisma of Michael Douglas made the original a true masterpiece for fans of the genre.
In 1992, the film became a real phenomenon, having received 2 nominations for an Oscar, a decent box office and the delight of the public.
The producers and director Paul Verhoeven knew very well that the story was over, so they worked on other projects with a clear conscience, but 14 years later, Michael Keyton-Jones decided to make a sequel for some reason and even lured Sharon Stone into it.
She, of course, is a prominent woman, but at 48 she can’t even win back sexuality, so 7 nominations for Golden Raspberries, 4 of which turned out to be winning, became a well-deserved ending.
5. Three X 2: New Level | 2005
The first part was shot according to all the canons: a brutal protagonist, gorgeous special effects, a banal, but without idiocy plot, good camera work.
In the sequel, the main ingredient, Vin Diesel, was removed from this recipe, but idiots were poured into the plot narrative from the heart. What the authors thought, changing the Fast and the Furious star to Ice Cube remains a mystery.
Not having recaptured the budget, the studio forgot about the project for a long time, until it again agreed with Diesel. The training camp of "World Domination" clearly showed that "bald drags."
4. The fly 2 | 1989
Filmed by David Cronenberg in 1986, the first part now goes to the top 50 best horror films according to IMDb users, and for its time it became a landmark work, glorifying the director and giving a huge impetus to the whole genre.
The continuation, shot by another director, is not included in any decent top and had no effect on the genre.
The sequel turned out to be absurd: when watching the viewer felt not so much fear as disgust, and the question “Well, what the hell ?!” revolved in my head.
3. Scam 2 | 1983
The 1973 original is an example of a robbery movie. Largely thanks to him, decades later, Ocean's friends and all the others appeared, since the tape is really iconic.
She received 10 Oscar nominations, taking 7 statuettes (including for the best film), and the main actors Paul Newman and Robert Redford gained even greater popularity.
In the sequel, they categorically refused to appear, and without them, the picture was doomed to failure. The only thing that could save the situation was a dashing plot, but here by.
2. Lost | 1983
This is the sequel to the musical film Saturday Night Fever, 1970, starring John Travolta. For the most part, it was he who paved the way for the actor to a big movie, but he obviously was not worth it to star in the sequel after 13 years.
If the first part was nominated for an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe, then the continuation was awarded only nominations for Golden Raspberries. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the film has a rating of 0%, which says a lot.
1. “Dumb and dumber: when Harry met Lloyd”, “Son of the Mask”, “Evan Almighty”, “Ace Ventura Jr.”
Jim Carrey is a unique actor and it's silly to argue with that. Not everyone likes his excessive antics, but one cannot but admit that he has great talent, so making a sequel to films built entirely on his game without him is a meaningless undertaking.
We specifically did not begin to single out one film, since they are all equally bad. Watching the attempts of some kind of “no-name” to repeat Kerry's facial expressions and gestures is painful.
The only exception is “Evan Almighty”, which in general turned out to be normal, if not one but: they spent 175 million dollars on it (!!!). Just think about how much money this is, especially by the standards of 2007. The first Iron Man a year later was worth 35 million less, and even modern blockbusters are often cheaper.
